I was at Hobby Lobby the other day and they had glass jars 50% off and I couldn’t resist buying one. I found one that would make a good-sized dog treat jar (around 8-9″ tall) and on sale it was less than $2.50 with tax! Sweet!
I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it exactly….When I first started the project I envisioned decoupaging strips of burlap all over it but when I got started I just decided to wrap the who thing in burlap.
So I took a remnant of burlap from my burlap signs and I folded the edge.
Then I taped and rolled it to see how long of a piece I needed.
And then I decided how high I wanted it.
I folded the bottom edge of the burlap under but the top edge was the original selvage edge of the burlap and I liked the way it looked so I didn’t turn it under. I also stenciled {treats} with brown paint and added some ribbon.
Next I attached everything to the jar with E6000 craft glue. I would have hot glued it but I couldn’t find my hot glue gun! :(
I made sure the ribbons matched up in the back.
The I decided that the burlap was a little soft so I decided to spray paint it with clear spray paint. I love the Rustoleum from Home Depot. I decided to do all of this at like midnight which is why it looks dark outside!
The original lid was stainless steel and though it wasn’t bad-looking, since everything was brown I decided to use some brown hammered metal spray paint I had on hand. I was a little heavy-handed with the spray paint because it was dark outside so I ended up having to sand a few areas and do another coat. Next time I will try to be more careful!
So after spray painting this is what it looked like. You might not be able to tell but the burlap is a little darker and thicker. It was a little boring so I took out the brown puffy paint.
And ended up with this:
I realized you could hardly see the {treats} now! Bummer! The puffy paint only came in that shade of brown. So I whipped out the black paint and a small paint brush and went over the puffy paint with the black paint. I put a small bit of clear spray paint over it to seal it. It looked much better!
Here’s a close up of the top. I love the hammered metal and the rough top edge of the burlap!
Here’s the back side.
And ta-da, the front!
I am super happy how this came out. I love it! I can’t wait to put the dog’s treats in it. And it cost me less than $3 because I already had all the other materials. This is another confirmation that burlap rocks!
Until later, happy crafting!
