I found a few driftwood boards last week when I was taking pictures under the bridge in Nassau Bay. My favorite one was a piece of old fence board that was about 22″ long. I found the perfect spot for it over the door in my [lime green] downstairs half bath. I completely stripped the bathroom and redid it but I am stuck on the decoration phase. So I stared at at the board and thought and thought and thought for days about what I wanted to paint on it. Finally I came up with something!
If you don’t know already, I love all things tropical. This bathroom (which I have not revealed yet) is an amazing color of lime green. The pictures (and lighting) don’t do it justice! It is Behr “Japanese Fern”. Until recently it was the only room in my house that I didn’t paint beige (I’m indecisive with other colors!). This color makes me feel happy and warm….I love it! Plus I have used it in 4 different places I have lived and always get tons of complements.
For my sign, I had a great idea of layering the paint so I could distress it…turquoise, orange, then yellow… Of course I didn’t take pics of it before I started…(duh)! I used my Cricut to cut a contact paper stencil.
But I ran into a couple of problems… 1) Because the board was very rough, the paint seeped out of the edges of the stencil. I had to take a knife to scrap around the edges and get it off. That’s why you see flecks of paint in all around in the close up. 2) The pine board was so soft and decaying that if you even scraped it with your fingers it turned to dust. Yeah…that was not good for the whole distressing layered paint thing. So you can’t really tell there are layers underneath. Oh well, I’ll try that again on another (newer) board.
But I LOOOOOOVE how it came out!
One day I will finish my bathroom and show it to you. It has come a long way from the horrid lavender mess it was when I moved in! But until then, I will just enjoy my sign. :)
Until later, happy painting!
